Abounding in Love

Psalms 86:5 says, You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.

I have heard it said love is not a feeling. But if that is true then what is the strong emotion I feel for my husband and children? How do we define that?

Love is an act of kindness and compassion toward others that leads them to find God for themselves. And this being so, sometimes love must do courageous and even hard things such as not allowing another person to continue in sin even if it means being perceived as unloving by the person.

For example, I dearly love all five of my children more than I can say. If they are heading the wrong direction and walking in sin in any way, I will lovingly tell them to change direction. God’s way is the only way for them to truly live and learn what love is for themselves. This “type” of loving, while not easy, causes the recipient to abound in love. Not only abound in my love but the love of the Lord

We will more fully understand the abounding love of the Father when we are loved enough by someone who will tell us what we need to hear to bring us to call on Him. For it is His loving kindness that leads us to repentance. This leads to action as well as the emotion of abounding love for God and for others.
