A Clean Heart

Psalm 51:10 says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.”

These words were penned by King David when he had sinned with Bathsheba, and Nathan, the prophet, confronted the king with his sin.

I often wonder if Christians see conviction and repentance as negative in today’s word. Sin is not much fun to talk about, let alone confess. We certainly would not want a trusted brother or sister to confront us with it. Why that would be judgmental, wouldn’t it?

But no, my friends. It is not a negative to face our sin, repent of it through confession, then turn from it and be forgiven. And a brother or sister in Christ pointing it out should be seen as a loving act.

Several years ago, one of my children did not want to wait for the walk sign at a busy intersection. She darted out right in front of a moving car. I caught her by the arm, pulling so hard I pulled her arm out of socket. She narrowly escaped being hit. Why would I do something that caused my child pain? Because I love her! I am sorry her arm was hurt, but her actions could have completely destroyed her!

That is what sin can do to you and me. Our response must be like David’s. We need to see it through God’s eyes and turn from it. Then we can have a clean heart and a renewed walk with God! How about let’s start the day out in just this way?
